#NYG Nightly – Wednesday, July 23rd

#NYG Nightly for Wednesday, July 23, 2014

Training camp continued for the Giants on Wednesday. Noticeably absent from the workout was the team’s injury cart, which got more work on Monday than Jim Fassel has had in years. That, however, didn’t mean the Giants didn’t have injuries to contend with. A balky hamstring and comments from the GM headline tonight’s #NYG Nightly.

Beckham Battling Hamstring Injury

Rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. did his best Hakeem Nicks impression by working out on the sidelines alone during practice. Beckham is battling a hamstring injury, though the severity of it isn’t clear. It also isn’t known when Beckham will be 100%. Hamstring issues also limited Beckham during previous offseason activities.

Reese Meets with Media

Jerry Reese met with the media and addressed an array of topics before Wednesday’s practice. Among them was the hiring and subsequent controversy involving former wide receiver David Tyree. Reese said that Tyree is “qualified” to be the director of player development, despite his past incendiary remarks about gay marriage. Reese also said Tyree is a “terrific fit” and the Giants are happy to have him. You can still vote and comment on Tyree’s hiring by clicking here.

Meanwhile, Reese said he expects Eli Manning to “bounce back and be the Pro Bowl-caliber football player” that the Giants know he can be. Reese also compared tight end Adrian Robinson to Denver’s Julius Thomas, who only had NFL catch before breaking out last season.

News and Notes for July 23rd

  • Eli Manning said he’s a “little nervous” in Ben McAdoo’s new offense. You can read more about why Eli should be nervous by clicking here.
  • A day after leaving practice early with a troublesome foot, linebacker Jameel McClain was working on a limited basis.
  • Brandon McManus went 4/4 on his field goal attempts on Wednesday. There’s said to be a real competition between McManus and incumbent Josh Brown for the kicking job. Maybe now that will get ESPN to update McManus’ picture on his profile page (not photoshopped).Brandon McManus ESPN
  • Tom Coughlin says left tackle Will Beatty is “doing more than expected” in practice. Beatty, who drew the ire of Giants fans the world over for his subpar play last season, is coming back from a broken leg.
  • After so many “heat-related” issues on Tuesday, Coughlin interrupted Wednesday’s practice for a cool down break.
  • Filthadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson has been suspended four games for violating the league’s policy on performance-enhancing drugs.

What’s Ahead

Training camp continues with practice at 1:20 Thursday afternoon. The practice is open to the public, and running backs and defensive backs are scheduled to sign autographs after the workout.

Both the Cowboys and Redskins are slated to hold their first practices of training camp Thursday. The Eagles will report to camp on Friday.
